Cricket's Three Formats and Major Tournaments

T20 — Fast and Intense

T20 is the shortest and most intense format of cricket. A team has just twenty overs to give their best. Bangladesh's BPL and India's IPL are both played in this format, and the T20 World Cup is a special occasion for cricket fans in Bangladesh. The pace of a T20 match is so fast that betting markets can change with every over.

Most Popular

ODI — A Balanced Contest

The fifty-over ODI format allows more time for strategy than T20. When the Bangladesh Tigers take the field in international ODIs, every wicket and run directly affects the betting markets. ODI tournaments run throughout the year as part of the ICC World Cup cycle, so there are betting opportunities all year round.

International Series

Test — A Test of Patience

Five-day Test cricket is the longest and most traditional format of the game. A draw is possible here, so betting outcomes need to be analysed differently compared to T20 or ODI. Some betting markets apply only to Tests — such as innings-based runs or the result of each day's play.

BPL, IPL and the International Stage

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) takes place every winter and is a special occasion for cricket fans across the country. You can bet on every BPL match at z baazi.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is an internationally recognised T20 franchise league that is also hugely popular among audiences in Bangladesh. Betting opportunities are also available for the ICC T20 World Cup, Asia Cup and bilateral series.

Football and Other Sports — What is the Difference?

Alongside cricket, z baazi also offers betting on football and several other popular sports. However, the style of betting varies quite a bit between sports.

In football, a match can end in one of three ways — home win, away win or draw. This three-way market is different from ODI or T20 cricket, where a draw is generally not possible. In Test cricket, however, a draw is possible, so the range of outcomes is closer to football.

In football, markets like number of goals, corners and cards work in the same way as runs, wickets or sixes markets in cricket. Every sport has its own rhythm, so having solid knowledge of a particular sport makes the betting experience more meaningful.

Whether it is cricket or football, betting should be for entertainment. Read our Responsible Gaming guidelines to bet responsibly.

Key Differences by Format

  • T20 and ODI generally have no draw — only two possible outcomes
  • In Test cricket, three outcomes are possible: Team A win, Team B win or draw
  • Cricket offers many special markets based on wickets and overs
  • Football has goals/corners/cards markets; cricket has runs/wickets/sixes
  • Weather and pitch conditions play an important role in cricket betting

Popular Betting Markets — How Each One Works

Match Winner

The simplest market — who will win the match? Team A or Team B. Example: in a T20 match between Team A and Team B, if you think Team B will win, you bet on Team B. If Team B wins, your bet is successful.

Most Played Market

Toss Winner

Which team will win the toss? This is not directly linked to the match result, but it is available as a separate market. Example: if Team A's captain has a strong record of winning tosses, someone might use that analysis to participate in the Toss market.

Pre-Match

Top Batsman

Which batsman will score the most runs for their team? In this market you predict the highest run-scorer within a specific team. Example: if you think Team B's opener will score the most runs for their side, you can select that batsman.

Player Market

Total Runs Over/Under

Will the total runs in an innings or across the whole match be more (Over) or less (Under) than a set number? Example: will Team A score more than 160 runs in their first innings — you can choose Over or Under in this market.

Runs Market

Top Wicket Taker

Which bowler will take the most wickets in the match? This market is especially popular in cricket. Example: if analysis of the pitch suggests a spinner from Team A will perform well, you can select that bowler.

Bowler Market

Multi Bet

A multi bet combines multiple selections into a single bet. Example: Team A wins a BPL match and Team B wins a separate IPL match — combining these two selections makes one multi bet. If all selections are correct the return is higher, but if even one fails the entire bet is lost.

Multiple Matches

How to Read and Understand Odds

In betting, odds represent the potential return on a bet. Odds are displayed in three main formats — Decimal, Fractional and American. Decimal format is most commonly used at z baazi.

Example 1 — Team A to win (৳500 bet)

Format Odds What it means
Decimal 2.50 ৳2.50 returned per ৳1 staked
Fractional 3/2 ৳3 profit for every ৳2 staked
American +150 ৳150 profit on a ৳100 bet

A ৳500 bet on a win returns a total of ৳1,250 (৳750 profit + ৳500 original stake). If the bet loses, ৳500 is gone.

Example 2 — Team B to win (Favourite)

Format Odds What it means
Decimal 1.50 ৳1.50 returned per ৳1 staked
Fractional 1/2 ৳1 profit for every ৳2 staked
American -200 ৳200 needed to make ৳100 profit

A ৳500 bet on Team B winning returns a total of ৳750 (৳250 profit + ৳500 original stake). American minus odds indicate the favourite.

Keep in mind: The lower the decimal odds, the more that team is considered the favourite. American plus (+) odds indicate the underdog; minus (−) odds indicate the favourite. All three formats express the same probability — only the way they are written differs.

In-Play Betting During the Match — New Opportunities Every Over

In-play or live betting lets you place bets after the match has already started. In cricket this is particularly engaging, because the odds in the market shift instantly after every wicket or big six.

For example, if Team B is 55 for 3 after the first ten overs, their chances of winning drop and Team A's odds become more attractive. Then two consecutive sixes can turn the situation around again.

Markets close very quickly in live betting, so decisions need to be made fast. Live betting is available on the z baazi App — find out more on the z baazi App page.

  • New markets open after every over
  • Odds update instantly when a wicket falls
  • New run rate markets become available at the end of the powerplay
  • Last over market: how many runs will be scored this over

Some Useful Tips for Cricket Betting

01
Understand one market well first — rather than joining all markets at once, start with Match Winner or Total Runs. These markets are easier to understand and the outcomes are clear.
02
Consider the pitch and weather — in cricket, the type of pitch (spin-friendly or pace-friendly) and the weather directly affect the flow of the match. If rain shortens a match, the rules for bets may also change.
03
Be careful with multi bets — even though the potential return looks higher on a multi bet, the risk is also higher. If any single selection is wrong, the entire bet is lost. It is better not to include more than two selections when starting out.
04
Set a budget in advance — betting is for entertainment. Decide how much you will spend in each session beforehand and stay within that limit. Do not go beyond your budget in an attempt to recover losses.
05
Different markets suit different formats — high-scoring markets are more common in T20, but innings-based markets are more meaningful in Tests. Choose your market based on the format.

Common Questions

The basic process is the same, but the types of markets available differ by format. T20 and ODI matches generally do not end in a draw, so markets offer two possible outcomes. In Test cricket, a draw is possible, so markets are built around three outcomes. Test matches also have innings-based special markets that do not exist in T20.

In live betting you can place bets after the match has started, but not all markets are open at all times. Some markets may be temporarily suspended between deliveries or at the end of an over. Markets reopen after a wicket falls or after a significant event in the match.

The main markets — Match Winner, Toss, Total Runs, Top Batsman — are available for both BPL and IPL. However, market availability may depend on the type and situation of the match. International matches such as the T20 World Cup generally offer the same types of markets.

In the Over/Under market, a specific number (the line) is set. Example: the total runs in the first innings with a line of 165 — if you think runs will exceed that, choose "Over"; if you think they will fall short, choose "Under". Live markets such as how many runs will be scored in the first 10 overs of a T20 match may also be available.

If a match is abandoned or revised under the DLS method, betting rules may change. Generally, bets are cancelled or voided if a minimum number of overs is not completed. For detailed rules, please see our Terms & Conditions page.
